White Paper

Everything we do is backed by data.

Do you want to know more about the technology behind the IDUN Guardian?  This white paper provides a detailed and in-depth introduction to our technology and its applications. It focuses on the benefits of the IDUN Guardian compared to traditional full-scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and other wearable biomonitoring systems. We provide validation of the IDUN in-ear EEG system to measure neuronal activity from various cortical sources covering multiple well-studied functions of the human brain, such as sensory and cognitive processes.

We also discuss the potential use cases of in-ear EEG, such as sleep monitoring, personalized hearing, cognitive workload assessment, eye movement-based control, and others. We further explore different aspects of sensor fusion, covering other physiological signals that can be extracted from the ear canal with our proprietary sensor and from additional sensors that can be integrated into hearables. Additionally, this white paper provides an overview of the current state of the field and an exploration of potential future developments.

White Paper Extract:

Here’s a comparison of the power spectra of a night recording between a frontal scalp EEG channel (F4) and the in-ear sensor of the IDUN Guardian.

This is a visual representation of a single subject’s night recording, illustrating the power distributions of the EEG signal derived from a frontal scalp-EEG channel (F4) and the IDUN Guardian’s signal. The spectrogram, a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies in a signal as they change over time, already reveals clear similarities between the two EEG signals. As we further investigate the distribution of EEG power across this recording, these similarities become even more evident. By displaying the occurrence of EEG band-specific power across the night recording for both the scalp channel F4 and our in-ear EEG signal, we demonstrate not only the clear similarities between the two EEG systems in detecting neuronal activity but also the changes in power distribution across different sleep stages and cycles.
